Labor Day Weekend

Its Friday before the long Labor Day Weekend......yea! I just hope the weather decides to cool off. Its been way too hot. Today I have some pictures from last weeks show and tell from the Manteca membership meeting. I LOVE the quilt below.....and have bought the book so I can make one of my own.....this is Jan's quilt and she did a good job...love those colors....it just seems to glow.

The quilt below was made by marking a line in the middle of the batting and placing a strip and then doing a sew and flip....so you quilt the top as you sew. Was a beautiful quilt.
Here is Lynn's quilt made out of batiks.....love the look of batiks. Love this quilt.
More show and tell in the photo section of the Manteca Quilters web site.....check it out. I hope to get some sewing done this weekend.....with the fan blowing on me to be sure. Have a good weekend and stay cool.

Counting Tickets

Tuesday night sewing group spent our time counting Opportunity Quilt tickets and stapling them together. We will be selling tickets for the quilt at Alex's Anderson Quilting in the Garden on September 22 and 23. It didn't take long and all the tickets were done.
Many hands make the work easy and lots of talking was done and the world's problems solved while we worked.
Judy brought her latest project......a class at R Lily Stem. She wanted our opinions on what color to use in her boarder and we all got involved. She's going to have a beautiful quilt when she gets it done.
The 2008 Opportunity Quilt is pictured on the Manteca Quilters web site.....under quilt show. Its a beautiful quilt and we should sell lots of tickets.

Saturday Workshop

Class was fun on Saturday and below are the first four blocks I finished in class. Later I finished four more blocks so I have a total of eight blocks done......and many more to sew.

Here is our teacher Debbie talking about sewing the blocks and how to achieve the look we want.

A couple people in the class made what I call a controlled scrappy block...Carol's is below...beautiful.
Pat used her black and white collection of fabric with purple centers another beautiful block.
Pegi wanted to use up her vast collection of Christmas fabric......what a cool idea.
Other quilters in the class did the scrappy look like me.......use up at those FQ's and scraps from other projects.
We found out that you need lots of different sized strips from 1 1/4 inch to 3 inches....you don't want the strips to match when you sew them together......no seams to match.....a quilters dream.
I have a meeting on my annual September retreat tonight.....we're going to talk about food and quilting projects we want to work on together......I going to teach the coiled fabric bowls that I made a few months ago. We go on retreat on September 12 to 16th. We'll stop at the Sonora Quilt Show on Sunday before we go home.

Mumbo Gumbo Weekend

I have been cutting strips for days.......getting ready for my Mumbo Gumbo workshop tomorrow in Manteca. Can't have too many strips cut before class and when I get to class I want to sew!

All ready cut my black and yellow squares and made triangle out of them and have most of the black triangles sewn to the yellow triangles. Cutting more strips tonight........
It's going to be a colorful quilt! Have a good weekend.

Meet The Teachers

Meet the teachers was fun on Monday night.....lots of cool classes to choose from. The picture below is examples from the Strip Club classes (removal of clothes not required). 2 1/2 inch strips for four different strip classes. Friday, Sept 21, Oct. 19, Nov. 16 and Dec. 21. 5:00 pm to 8:00 p.m. I don't know which class you make the quilts below....but I really like the black and red one.

The quilt in the next picture is called Heart and Home by Barb Foote. She designed it herself. I've taken classes from Barb before and she is a good teacher.
One Block Wonder is seen in the next two pictures. This is not a print fabric.....it is a fabric that you cut....think stack n wack.....and it comes out looking like the pictures. Very different.

Isn't frost bite cute.....Judi Boydston is the teacher and this wall hanging looks like it would be fun to make....and you could use it all winter long....not just for christmas.
Pam Howland's new class sample is below....sunshine and shade.
I'm not taking any of the classes seen above......I'm taking Debi's 4 1/2 inch Square Mystery. She heard me say how much I liked the red and black quilt in the first picture......she pointed to her mystery class so that's what I'm doing. Don't know what it will look like but I trust Debi and can't wait to see what it will turn out to be. Now I have to cut 63 4 1/2 inch red squares and I'll be ready for class on October 7.

Zucchini Torte Recipe

We tasted this torte recipe at the purse workshop and Sandra Hadley e-mailed it to me so I could post it. Enjoy.....its very good.

Maria's Zucchini Torte

4 cps thinly sliced zucchini (both green and yellow)

1/2 cup Bisquick
salt and pepper to taste
4 eggs
1 cup freshly grated parmesan cheese
1/2 chopped red onion
Garlic and Parsley to taste

Preheat oven at 350 degrees. Spray glass cooking pan with PAM.

Mix all the above ingredients together and spread into a 9x9 glass cooking pan. Cook at 350 degrees for 45 mins.

Ms Natalie's purse

This is the purse I made this weekend for Ms Natalie. She likes skulls and pink.....I found this fabric and bought it hoping she would like it for a purse......she liked it....wow. Who knew I could pick out fabric she liked. I used a heavy interfacing this time.....so the purse feels much stiffer then my purse. It has a pocket on the out and inside.

I didn't have the fabric for the inside......Dianah used the day of the dead fabric on a purse she made when she taught the purse class. So on Saturday when I was in Stockton at the quilt store I looked for the fabric.....its perfect for the inside of this purse......and since the purse is reversible she can use it either way.

I did get a few things finished this weekend. Below is the August Block of the Month....our meeting is Thursday night. The block is done and I don't have to worry about sewing it on Wednesday night.
I also finished two blocks from my mystery quilt class from last year.....have 6 blocks done...just need to cut the strips for the other blocks and then sew them. Its going to be a bright quilt.
I also worked on a purse for ms Natalie made with the same pattern from Dianah's class at the beginning of the month. I will take pictures and post soon.

Tonight is meet the teachers at Cloth and Quilt....its so much fun meeting the teachers and seeing the class sample of the class they are going to teach. Pictures tomorrow.

WIP...work in progress friday

This is what I've been working on.....the last couple of weeks. An old embroidery project I picked up at Horsefeathers.....when they were still in business. I found it in my piles of stuff and decided to work on it and get it done. I'm in the process of making all the french knots in the Sunflower. Now I'm one of those strange people who like making french knots. I'm using a variegated red thread.

I don't know what I'm going to do with this after its done....maybe make a small wall hanging? This weekend I plan on doing some sewing and getting ready for the workshop next Saturday at Manteca quilters.....lots of strips to cut. Have a good weekend.

California Sunrise

As I walked out to my car this morning and looked east over the pasture, this is what I saw. So I fished my camera out of my purse and took this picture. Living in the country one gets to see beautiful sunrises and sunsets.

Tuesday night Barbara showed us another purse she'd made since the purse class. She received the fabric from her secret pal (purse on the right) and made this purse. Cool. She also made a small zippered pouch to go with her flamenco purse....its kind of hard to see in this picture.
Barbara took a mystery class from Debi at Cloth and Quilt and this is the center of her quilt, she's trying to decide on the boarders for this quilt. I really love the prints and colors she used in this quilt. Can't wait to see it done.

Program With Sandy Coelho

At last weeks Oakdale Quilters meeting Sandy Coelho gave us a wonderful program and we got to see some of her quilts. Love the quilt she is showing below.....she will be coming out with a pattern soon and Marie at Quilters Cabin will be carrying it.

The next two pictures are of wall hangings made using the technique we learned at the workshop. I've already bought the panel of sunflowers from Marie so I can make something like this quilt.

A birthday cake wall hanging....don't you just love it!

Beautiful quilt below....sorry the cup is in the picture.

More pictures on the Oakdale Quilters web site.....take a peak.

The Finished Project

Took a picture of my finished project from Saturday's workshop with Sandy Coelho. I wanted to make a fall picture......a tree turning colors in the fall. See below.

The close up shows the little pieces of fabric that is used to make this picture.....cool. I really want to make more pictures using this technique. Wow....this picture really shows my machine quilting I used......I may have to do some more on it.

Sandy Coelho Workshop

I really enjoyed Sandy Coelho's Workshop on Saturday. This is such a different technique from anything I've ever done. I know I'll be doing more pictures using this style.....it's such fun. Below is my sewing machine as I was stitching my project.

Below is a picture of Sandy Coelho and Shirley working on Shirley's project.
Here is Deborah's picture......it turned out beautiful.
Marie is working on her picture.....Sandy stayed at Marie's and Marie got a head start on her project the night before. She added horses to her picture.
The whole group working hard at the workshop.
Here is Sandy's latest piece....made the night before at Marie's house......it really turned out nice. Love the little girl in the red wagon and the chicken in her picture.....it shows what you can do using this technique.

My project is all finished......after I took it home all I had to do was sew on the binding.....its done and I forgot to take a picture for today....but I will do it tomorrow and post my finished piece.

The End of The Week

The week is over and now it is time to play......I have a workshop tomorrow at my Oakdale guild. Sandy Coelho is teaching us Scrapscapes....Art Quilts. "Beautiful landscape quilts you can complete in a day. Use your own landscape or ours." that is a quote from the pattern. Below is a picture of the sample of her class.

Most of the picture is made of little pieces of fabric.......the tree's are one piece of fabric. The whole quilt is covered in tulle netting. This is going to be a fun class....can't wait.
I will be taking pictures and posting them next week. Sandy gave our guild a program list night and said that we will go home with a finished project. Have a good weekend. Sandy has a web site here.

Time For Recipe's

At the Tuesday night group we were talking about recipe's using the summer favorite.....zucchini...here is one to try. You could make this in two loaf pans for zucchini bread.

From Sunset Magazine

Chocolate Zucchini Cake

2 1/2 cups regular all-purpose flour, unsifted
1/2 cup cocoa
2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon cinnamon
3/4 cup soft butter
2 cups sugar
3 eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla
2 teaspoons grated orange peel
2 cups coarsely shredded zucchini
1/2 cup milk
1 cup chopped walnuts or pecans
Glaze (directions follow)

Preheat the oven to 350°F.

1 Combine the four, cocoa, baking powder, soda, salt, and cinnamon; set aside.

2 With a mixer, beat together the butter and the sugar until they are smoothly blended. Add the eggs to the butter and sugar mixture one at a time, beating well after each addition. With a spoon, stir in the vanilla, orange peel, and zucchini.

3 Alternately stir the dry ingredients and the milk into the zucchini mixture, including the nuts with the last addition.

4 Pour the batter into a greased and flour-dusted 10-inch tube pan or bundt pan. Bake in the oven for about 50 minutes (test at 45 minutes!) or until a wooden pick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool in pan 15 minutes; turn out on wire rack to cool thoroughly.

5 Drizzle glaze over cake.

Glaze: Mix together 2 cups powdered sugar, 3 Tablespoons milk, and 1 teaspoon vanilla. Beat until smooth.

Cut in thin slices to serve. Makes 10-12 servings.

More Purse Pictures

Barbara made this wonderful purse out of the Flamenco fabric.....very cool. Love those pink birds. This second fabric used is black with dots on it.
Sharon made this wonderful flowered purse. A good purse for the summer.

Thank you Dianah for teaching such a fun class.....you are a wonderful teacher.

Cool, cool Monday

Nature decided to turn on the air conditioning.....what a cool off we had yesterday. I was pulling on the quilts last night as I was cold.

I was very productive at the purse class on Saturday. Below is a picture of my finished purse...it was fun and easy to sew. I will be making more.

Here is a wall of purses....some finished and some in various stages of construction. The Junior members of the guild who were there enjoyed sewing their purse's....we all had a good time.
More pictures from the workshop on the Manteca Quilters web site. I finished my purse by noon and then worked on my reversible quilt and finished four more blocks.

In The Finished Pile

Finished Candy is Dandy last night......I got all the binding sewn on last night. Now I have to hand sew down the bottom of the hanging sleeve....and the quilt is done!! YEA!!! This quilt is sewn by me....machine quilted by me.....its all about me....doing everything on this quilt.

If you need more light on your sewing area......run down to Big Lots and buy this light. They have the floor lamp and table lamp on sale for $30.00. Its has light like a Ott lamp but doesn't cost as much and comes with an extra bulb......after I turned it on I could see all the dust that is on my machine.....works good. I got the floor lamp.
Tomorrow I'm taking a purse class from Dianah......can't wait. Here is the fabric I bought for the reversible purse. Sewing stuff......I can use this purse when I go to quilt shows....fun.
Then I got an extra set of fabric for another purse.......the colors are a little more purple then this picture shows. So maybe I'll sew two purses at once.
Have a good weekend.....I'm going to be sewing.....more projects to get done.
